When I’m desperate and comfortless, there is something about literally knocking, as I start a prayer time, that brings me in – into a sense of God’s presence, into a tangible connection, into a holy moment with him.
There’s something about knocking that brings my thoughts to the above passage as I pray, and the rich imagery of what I look like to God as I am knocking.
And, what God looks like on the other side of the “door”, as I am knocking.
God doesn’t look like that friend, all tired in the middle of the night, with no energy. He is the God who never sleeps nor slumbers.
He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
Psalm 121:3-4

But he does look like the God who is delighted that I took his word seriously, and am being impudent and persistent in my prayer and asking and seeking and knocking:
“…yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
Luke 18:5-8
He also has promised that if we persistently ask, seek, knock, then he will act. He will give us the Holy Spirit. If we ask, he will give us the Holy Spirit. Why wouldn’t he give us the Holy Spirit? It’s the very thing he wants to give to us!
If we ask, he will give us peace in our souls, marriages, homes, children, careers, communities. These are the very things he wants to give to us! Why wouldn’t he give these things to us?
But we must ask. We must be persistent. We must knock.
Knock.
