Faith and Justice

For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’ And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Luke 18:4-8

God, is there faith in my heart? Do I have even a mustard seed of faith in my heart? I’m doubting that I have faith, because you said that if I have just a mustard seed of faith, I can speak to a mountain and it will move. Lord, I’ve never spoken to a mountain – literally or metaphorically – and have had it move. That’s why, I’m not sure if I have even a mustard seed of faith.

Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief.

I’ve knocked and I’ve knocked and I’ve knocked persistently, like this widow in the parable above, but nothing has been done speedily. And again, is it because I don’t have even a mustard seed of faith? You said we ought to pray like the persistent widow, and that you will give justice to your children – your elect – and speedily. But, you also questioned, even if we did pray persistently like this widow, would you find faith on earth? Apparently, it’s not knocking and praying persistently that get results, but faith?

God, we don’t need a mountain of faith to move mountains, you require us to have only a mustard seed of faith to move a mountain. It appears that I don’t even have a mustard seed of faith. I don’t even have a tiny, tiny, tiny mustard seed of faith.

Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief.

Lord, will you find faith on earth? Lord, is there faith in my heart? Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief.

Thank you.

Lord, I believe. I believe what you said, that if I cry for justice like this persistent widow that you would hear me, and that you would give me justice and that you would do it speedily.

Lord, justice.

Give us justice. Give us justice in our sick bodies. Give us justice in our work places. Give us justice in our warring world. God, justice.

God, justice.

Amen

Yes – “Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief.” Where can we go that you will not see us or hear our heart’s cry. Hear it today, Lord. Answer it today, Lord.
