How to Pray (part 1/3)

And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:5-6

Pray in secret.

Go out into the woods, by yourself, take a walk, a hike, and pray.

Lock yourself in the bathroom, your bedroom, your garage – forget about the kids and husband for awhile, your parents and siblings, they’ll be alright without you – and pray. Spend time with God. Get it all out.

Go out to the front porch in the early morning or late at night, and pray.

And if you are called on in church, Bible study, or anywhere else, to pray out loud, act like you are in the secret, ignore everyone around you, and remember that you are talking to God. How would you talk with him if you were by yourself? Do it like that here, too.

Pray in secret.

Praying in secret really is the best because you can be yourself – because God is not a human, that he would condemn your prayers and condemn you for not having perfect words to say or the perfect emotions while you’re praying – he even understands your groans.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Romans 8:26-27

Pray in secret.

Prayer

God, help me to just do what you say, as it pertains to prayer. Amen.
